Everyday, volunteers get out of bed and use their time and energy to help others, to listento others, to build community, and to find their own place in that community. It is an actof commitment and belief in the goodness in ourselves and other people. Our communitywould just not function if these volunteers were not willing to step up and help.Fortunately, there are many people who do volunteer for a myriad of organizations. Theseorganisations include ones working in and promoting health, education, welfare,environment, culture, arts, sport, and often a mix of all of these. National Volunteer Week (17-23 May 2021) seeks to recognise the invaluable contribution ofvolunteers to their communities and to the Australian society as whole. This exhibition isrecognises and showcases people who volunteer across our region. There are many more volunteers participating in our community which regrettably, we wish we did not have the time to include. Our region is very fortunate for these people’s contributions and our hats go off to all of them. Only twenty organizations across Cairns have been photographed for this event, and we thank them for their timeand patience. Roland Nancarrow takes us through a tour of his acrylic and watercolour paintings and sculptures which were completed in response to three artist residencies on three resort islands in the Maldives. Cairns based artist, Nancarrow, spent seven weeks on Reethi Rah in 2016, three months on Niyama Private Islands in 2017 and another three months on Atmosphere Kanifushi in 2018 Most of the paintings and watercolours were completed on the islands whilst the sculptures were completed in Cairns from the various encounters with bird species on the islands. The Residencies gave the artist the opportunity to explore the watercolour medium in several series commencing with the Niyama Garden series in 2017. Each series is fully illustrated in the ‘Maldives Artworks’ book which accompanies this exhibition. The exhibition has been previously shown at Milton Galleries, Mackay, The Old Ambulance Galleries, Nambour and Tanks Art Centre. Check out the film at: Roland Nancarrow.

I was up bright and early this morning photographing and supporting this enthusiastic group of green thumbs! A group of 50 volunteering Treeforce Cairns members planted 1108 this morning from 7:30 – 10am of the intended 5000 trees which will be planted from May 26 – July 7th 2019 at Freshwater Creek. This is Treeforce’s contribution to the Cairns Regional Council’s Redlynch Sports and Recreation Master Plan (RMP). Unique Fashion Designer Sajeela and partner Dameon held their latest fashion show at Dundee’s Restaurant in the Cairns Aquarium in May 2019. An excited audience sat with baited breath awaiting the awards issued to Best Film and People’s Choice awards among others. The 3hr event did not disappoint with amazing CGI productions, documentaries, short narratives, comedies, dramas, music videos and more.  An eclectic array of short films for all pallets were on display from the 47 submissions in this year’s Understory Film Festival (Facebook page), which was held on Oct 13th 2018 at the Tanks Art Centre. in the end . After a solid week of rain, the clouds peeled away to reveal a full moon. Thankfully, it was a glorious evening for the sold out Waifs concert. The Waifs smashed out old favourites and also new hits on April 9th, 2017 at Munro Martin Parklands. Cairns’ newest venue. The result, a dancing crowd was drawn to the front of the stage.
